SOFIMAC PARTNERS SA, a company active for over 30 years on the high tech sector, operating via four sites, with the Italian basis in Rome, has recently started investment operations with the fund Technology and Health 1 (TH1). TH1 is a Venture Capital fund dedicated to innovative companies on the health care sector, from the early stage to first revenues phase. Market areas cover regenerative medicine, new devices and materials, in situ drug delivery, surgery, imaging, as well as telemedicine and diagnostics.
The investment zone spans from South Central France to Switzerland, North and Central Italy.

Axxam – an Italian company conducting early-stage discovery research programs for the life science industry – announced its participation in a consortium that has been awarded a grant of EUR 1.5 million by the Regione Lombardia (Metadistretti), covering 3/5 of the total project costs of EUR 2.5 million. This innovative research program is aimed at identifying selective inhibitors for ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT), a very recently identified key enzyme regulating the food intake of a fat-rich diet, thus offering an excellent entry point for the treatment of metabolic diseases.
The grant, which is non-refundable and will cover R&D expenses over a 36 month period, is intended to accelerate the development of innovative technologies and products in the local non-food biotechnology cluster (metadistretto). Funds are awarded on the basis of the scientific, technical and economic merit of each proposal.

MolMed S.p.A., Italian medical biotechnology company focused on the development of novel anticancer therapeutics, announced that the company is leader of a project that has been awarded a grant of € 1.4 million by Regione Lombardia for a € 2.2 million R&D project aimed at developing an innovative, automated manufacturing process for its cell-based therapy TK, that is currently in Phase III for high-risk leukaemias.
The project was submitted within a call of the plan by Regione Lombardia for the promotion of excellence in its industrial areas (known as Metadistretti). The grant is non-refundable and will partially cover R&D expenses of the project over a 36 month period. MolMed’s partners in the project are Areta International S.r.l. and Datamed S.r.l.

Bio3 Research – Italian biotech company that develops new proprietary compounds with therapeutic potential in the fields of cardiovascular disease and connective tissue regeneration – has exercised an option for exclusive license from ProtElix, Inc. d/b/a Protelica for mimic-antibody antagonists to HMGB1 under development for therapeutic use in cardiovascular disorders. Among such disorders are arterial stenosis, restenosis and atherosclerotic plaque progression. The mimic antibodies are being developed jointly by collaboratively under patents held by Bio3 (granted in the USA, Europe, Australia and Mexico; pending in Japan, Canada and China)

The Board of Directors of MolMed, by virtue of the powers granted by the resolution of the shareholders meeting held on April 26, 2010, recently announced the terms and conditions related to MolMed’s share capital increase via pre-emptive rights offering to existing shareholders of the Company. The Board of Directors resolved, inter alia, to issue a maximum amount of No. 105,207,808 ordinary shares at a price of Euro 0.55 per share, of which Euro 0.3429 represents share premium, and at a subscription ratio of 1 Share for each 1 existing ordinary share already held by the relevant shareholder. The Shares will rank equally in all respects with the existing ordinary shares of MolMed currently traded on the Mercato Telematico Azionario (MTA) managed by Borsa Italiana S.p.A.

Lonza (one of the world's leading suppliers to the pharmaceutical, healthcare and life science industries) and Axxam (an Italian discovery company focused on research programs for applications in the life science industry) announced the signing of a license agreement enabling Lonza to include Axxam’s Photina®, i-Photina® and Clytin® Photoproteins as calcium biosensors in Lonza’s broad range of Clonetics® Primary Cells.
“We are really pleased to have entered this license agreement with Lonza”, says Sabrina Corazza, responsible for Business Development at Axxam. “It allows us to further validate and exploit our proprietary technology platform on photoproteins, and to address relevant market needs.”

NicOx S.A., a pharmaceutical company focused on the research, development and future commercialization of drug candidates – with Italian and French laboratories – announced that new preclinical results for NCX 434 were presented at the Retina International World Congress in Stresa, Italy.
NCX 434 is a nitric oxide (NO)-donating new molecular entity (NME) and a potential preclinical candidate in Diabetic Macular Edema (DME). It was shown to reduce retinal damage due to ischemia (restriction of blood flow) and reperfusion (return of blood supply following ischemia) in a preclinical model without inducing a significant increase of intraocular pressure (IOP), in contrast to a reference steroid.
